Where I went #
Udon Ocha is located on one of the main roads in Udon Thani, between a famous roundabout and the Tukcom Landmark shopping centre.
In this area of town, the road is lined with Chinese shopfronts, and may hint at a Chinese influence on this dish. There are multiple cafés serving this dish in the area, and most of these café names contain ‘Ocha’ in their title… Perhaps hinting at a name, or style of this stew.
This will not win any prizes for appearances (especially with my rushed photography), but it is a delicious (and non-spicy) meal up here in the north!
What I liked #
- Friendly owners/staff (as always in the region).
- Quick and no-nonsense staff get the food out quickly
- Incredibly tasty food.
What I ate #
I tried the ‘stewed chicken’ … But do not let the name fool you, this is not like your regular stew! The thick broth is more like a tasty roast chicken gravy, than a typical stew. It is rich in flavour, and I am glad they recommended a bowl of rice to soak up as much of it as I could!
My dish included two chicken drumsticks, but these had obviously been cooked in the broth, as the meat just fell off the bone, and a single spoon was all I needed to finish the dish with clean hands 😄
The price was a little under 100 baht for the set, (chicken stew, rice and an ice tea).
The serving size is not too big, so if you are still hungry, I would also recommend the ‘bread’. This is a small roll, with dried and cured sweet meat inside.
